WHY

The anti-Pueblo celebration known as the Entrada was officially abolished last summer in Santa Fe. This victory belongs to the Pueblo and Navajo womxn who courageously took to the streets to demand accountability from the city for capitalizing on this racist celebration of Pueblo genocide.

This summer, the Pueblo and Navajo womxn of The Red Nation return to celebrate this victory and continue our grassroots work to build a successful movement for Pueblo liberation with two events during the week of Santa Fe Indian Market. We have chosen Indian Market week to capture the energy and volume of Pueblo people and visitors who are gathered in Santa Fe to celebrate Native art and culture. Our events align with this year’s Indian Market theme about honoring the resilience of Native women.

The first event is a panel discussion entitled “Three Centuries of Pueblo Resistance” that will take place the evening of August 14^th. Sponsored by the PFC, this panel will explore the vibrant history of Pueblo resistance and rally for future victories to liberate Pueblo people from settler colonialism once and for all. Panelists include Beata Tsosie-Peña from Santa Clara Pueblo, Nicole Martin from Laguna Pueblo, Lorelai Chavez from Kewa, Justine Teba from Tesuque Pueblo, and Jennifer Marley from San Ildefonso Pueblo.

The second event is a march led by Pueblo womxn to reclaim O gah Po’geh, which is the actual name of what we now know as ‘Santa Fe.’ Settled and exploited first by the Spanish, and later by white American settlers, O gah Po’geh is sacred to our Tewa relatives. The August 17^thmarch will be an educational tour about the history of liberation, and conquest, that has transpired in O gah Po’geh. Through a series of stops along the route, we hope to remind Santa Fe that it sits atop stolen Pueblo land. We will offer prayers for the land and water of this sacred place to re-establish our roles as caretakers and relatives.

The tour will start at the West Marcy Street entrance of the Santa Fe Community Convention Center (SFCCC), where we will learn about an old Tewa village that was excavated during the construction of the SFCCC. From there, we will march to the northwest corner of the Plaza, which was the site of the gallows Don Diego De Vargas used to execute 100 Pueblo people for standing up to Spanish atrocities during the so-called ‘peaceful reconquest.’ We will then march to Cathedral Park, which is home to a statue of De Vargas that glorifies the colonization of New Mexico. Here we will learn of the atrocities that Spanish conquistadors perpetrated against Pueblo people. Following our stop at Cathedral Park, we will march to the Cathedral Basilica of Santa Fe that was strategically built atop a sacred spring used by Pueblo ancestors for millennia; the place which gave O gah Po’geh its name: White Shell Water Place. We will then march to the center of the Plaza where we will learn about the racist obelisk that used to read, “In honor of all people who fell in battles with SAVAGE Indians” in the Territory of New Mexico. We will conclude our march at the southwest corner of the Plaza.

Please join us as we reclaim O gah Po’geh and build a strong movement for Pueblo liberation in New Mexico! Both events are free and open to the public. We especially encourage our Pueblo and Native relatives, elders, families, children, women, LGBTQ2, and youth to join us. Feel free to share the attached flyer, too!
