the Red Nation He Sapa Freedom Council stands in full solidarity with the mni luzahan creek patrol. we stand in solidarity with all relatives and comrades involved in the coalition effort to protect unsheltered relatives along mni luzahan, so called rapid creek. we hold firm to the truth that unsheltered relatives deserve unconditional care and have an unconditional right to safety. the settler state of south dakota and the settlement of rapid city occupy Oceti Sakowin territory in violation of the 1868 Ft. Laramie Treaty. Lakota relatives, all Oceti Sakowin relatives, have a right to live with dignity on their homelands.
we know that the settler state and it’s domestic military arm, the police force, are not caretakers; they protect settler colonialism, white supremacy, and property. the Red Nation He Sapa Freedom Council rejects any analysis of the lived realities of Indigenous peoples that excludes critique of capitalism. settler colonialism, white supremacy, cisheteropatriarchy, and capitalism are inextricably bound to one another. ignoring this reality only contributes to the violence of these tightly bound systems of oppression. our relatives’ current experiences of unshelteredness and harassment by the police are directly shaped by ongoing land theft and degradation of Indigenous livelihood by the settler state. mutual aid efforts are how we combat class warfare and sustain solidarity.
we reject settler mayor steve allender’s vile statements about unsheltered relatives in the violent border town of rapid city. former police chief allender reveals himself to be threatened by community efforts to extend care through mutual aid and reveals, as he has done in the past, his settler contempt for the most vulnerable among us. allender’s authority is illegitimate; he is a colonial agent on unceded treaty land. we decide how to care for our kin.
