The clans of the Wet’suwet’en Territories, now considered the central interior of British Columbia, are Title Holders and possess sovereignty and authority over their unceded territories.
The Unist’ot’en have been protecting their lands from proposed tar sands and fracking pipelines by several corporations including TransCanada, Chevron and Enbridge. The TransCanada Coastal GasLink pipeline would cross British Columbia with a span of over 400 miles. The Chevron Pacific Trails pipeline, whose purpose is to export to Asian markets would span about 300 miles.The Enbridge Northern Gateway pipelines would transport tar sands and condensate spanning over 700 miles. In total there are seven prospective pipelines the clans have been taking action to halt.
In January 2019 the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) brutally and violently assaulted the camps. In November the Community Industry Response Group (CIRG), a police detachment, arrested a guest of the Unist’ot’en people. CIRG continuously trespasses and patrols the areas, intimidates and conducts constant surveillance of the Wet’suwet’en people. The RCMP is once again preparing to inflict violence against the Wet’suwet’en people in order to protect colonial and imperialist interests. The police have surrounded the territory in what appears to be in preparation for an imminent raid.
We at The Red Nation condemn the actions taken by the illegitimate settler government of Canada. We stand in solidarity and with profound gratitude to the Wet’suwet’en People who have been defending the lands and non-human relatives from extractive industries in the face of brutalization from the RCMP and CIRG. We demand that the Canadian government recognize Wet’suwet’en autonomy and uphold their right to sovereignty on unceded territory. We demand that the Canadian government place an immediate and permanent moratorium on all extractive industries within the territory of Wet’suwet’en people.
To the Wet’suwet’en People from The Red Nation – We see you. We stand beside you in this time of struggle, recognizing your courage and the sacrifices you have made as water and land protectors. Know that we are your relatives and you always have our support.
